Special Bangla Natok - Love Lane (লাভ লেইন) l Tisha, Tahsan, Urmila l Drama \u0026 TelefilmIdentities were unknown, but Police were looking for men dressed as a cowboy, hunter, lion, construction worker, gangsta rapper and a clown.
When all was said and done, the Lion - a man named Travis Stay was arrested and tried for the murder, but ultimately, was found not guilty.
While many believe Stay was the perpetrator, others feel that some of the other men from the party bus may have actually committed the crime in a drunken rage.
Join host Steven Pacheco as he attempts to maneuver through this confusing case in an attempt to answer the question: Who murdered Joel Lovelien?
He was crying and his hands were shaking. The tears of the clown made police suspicious. But he clammed up and demanded a lawyer when investigators brought him to the police station for questioning.
The police also found the cowboy. But they say he gave them a false name and birthdate and became physically aggressive. They placed him in handcuffs temporarily, but did not arrest him.
According to police, the cowboy did ask an interesting question, though. Had the cowboy witnessed the fight that killed Lovelien?
The next day, police asked the clown and other witnesses to come back down to police headquarters. Now sober and cooperative, the cowboy and clown told a story that police felt exonerated them and other potential suspects on the bus.
While the bus was at the Broken Drum, the party-goers said, two of the passengers got into a fight outside the bar. One was a friend of theirs who was dressed as a hunter.
The other was a guy in a crude lion costume fashioned out of a yellow hoodie. Before it pulled away, they said, they saw the lion speaking to a guy in a green hockey jersey.
Stay, 23, told police that a man dressed as a hunter had punched him out in the parking lot. They saw bruises on his face, and cuts on his hands.
Stay told NBC News that he let police recover his costume, and gave them his shoes, which had blood on them — all without a search warrant or a lawyer present — because he was innocent.
Stay was arrested and charged with murder. He turned it down, he says, without hesitation. When you have a case like that which ends in an acquittal, I think there's a feeling of incompleteness.
Peter Welte, who was the state's attorney at the time of the case, said the case was shocking for the community because of the sheer violence and randomness of the crime.
He said Joel was well known and well liked throughout the community, which also added to the devastation.
Alexa said she sometimes thinks back to that day and feels sadness and frustration because she thinks her dad was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
She said bars make her feel uneasy now, and witnessing a fight is traumatic. She said if anything, she hopes people have learned to be more cautious because of this tragedy.
As time goes on, Alexa said the reality of her father's death has become less stinging, although the pain still ebbs and flows.
She said it's sometimes difficult when people recognize her because of her last name, but she enjoys when strangers tell her stories about her dad.
Alexa said her dad was the kind of man who would go out of his way to make people laugh-he'd dance and sing along to the "Spongebob Squarepants" theme song and took every chance to lovingly embarrass her.
She said he was a proud father who was interested in everything she did and would even "suffer through hours of shopping" just to make her happy.
Alexa said she's never going to stop missing or loving her dad, but the pain now at 26 feels different than it did at She recently found boxes of things her father had put in storage to save forever-her preschool progress report, cards she'd made him, "he kept everything.
